How to create a search engine friendly website

04 May 2012

In this article I’d like to reveal some main hints on how you can create a search engine friendly website or blog. And the first thing I want to point out is that search engine software is reading only text. You can add descriptions to the flash applications, video files and images and achieve zero effect. The text should be plain, unadulterated which can be seen by everybody on the website. It goes without saying that some search engine software can access the Flash files and scan them, but you won’t have any guarantees it is going to read all the information you want to.

If you want to create a game or a video site which will be well ranked in the search engines, you would need to write content for each of the non-text elements to give a description to them. For such websites you should also include supplemental texts on the page to describe what your video files show. Make your website accessible for people with poor eyesight and you will definitely make it more search engine friendly.

Check your HTML code for errors. I mean, serious errors which can badly distort the website appearance in the browser. Whether you write your HTML code by hand or use an editor, don’t neglect an opportunity to run the final code through HTML and CSS validators. Search engine software relies on the correctness of your code to work out what part of your website to index.

The title tags can greatly improve search engine optimization. You can put the name of your website on the homepage and use more meaningful links for each individual page.

Watch out the duplicate content. The pages cannot be identical on your website. Whilst manually creating a site you may not come across such problem. However, bear in mind that identical content appearing on two different pages can result in appearing not that important in the search engine’s index.
