Obtaining a web presence

23 July 2012

Consulting small businesses about a website and its advantages usually means answering such questions as how to get started, what it takes and how expensive that all is.

First thing first, let’s answer the most important question. Can you afford it? Yes, definitely. Most local web designers don’t charge mega money to design a website. What you can’t afford is NOT to have a website. That’s for sure! Most potential buyers prefer to start their research without actually leaving their homes and do all the shopping via the computers. The opportunities on the web are absolutely phenomenal and the boundaries of your site are limited only by your imagination and budget. Shall we look at the ways how you can get started?

First of all, you would need to pick the relevant and unique domain name. Think of the name or even the phrase which can easily stick to people’s memory. It would be ideal to reserve a domain name which would match your business name. If that cannot be done, include a search query in your name so that the site could come up in the search result list when the Internet users are browsing for a particular thing. If you’ve got a marriage agency, for example, you could include such words as “wedding,” “bride” or the word “marriage” itself in your domain name. However, don’t make the name too long and complicated. It should be easy to memorize.

Here are some of those places where you could look for an available domain name:

  • register.com
  • domains.org
  • godaddy.com
  • domains.com
  • namecheap.com

Most registrar companies charge their clients less than 10 dollars per a site name and do a brilliant job to assist you whilst you establish your new website. If the company overprice their work, don’t rush to use their services. There’s a lot of the competition out there and you can easily find the company at affordable rates.

Ok, so now you’ve registered your domain name and launched the site on the web, but fairly speaking there’s little sense in having a website that cannot be found by the audiences on the Internet. The next thing to do would be to submit your domain name to the search engines such as Google, Yandex, Yahoo, Bing, etc. It will take some time before your web pages are crawled by the electronic robots and hence, ranked in the search engines. This basically means that you don’t have a lot of time to prepare the content. It should be ready in advance so that you don’t waste your valuable time.

When the content has been developed, it’s time to look for a web-hosting partner. The company doesn’t necessarily have to be local, but you do need to know that the chosen company can provide your website with smooth functioning. Knowing these basics you will gain a decent web presence to establish your business online and entice new visitors on a regular basis.
