Outstanding designs

30 July 2012

It seems like everyday I have to deal with the clients who are ready to do something stupid regarding their websites. Sometimes it takes me couple of hours to talk customers out of making crazy things a reality.

Of course, being a web designer means to be able to give a client exactly what he or she wants, but it does happen when I can’t just keep silence when I see that a web project is taking the wrong direction. I also add in my two cents when I know that a website could look and function much better. Sometimes I even refuse to design a website if I strongly disagree with a client. It’s not because I’m so ambitious. The reason is that I’ve been in web industry for years and by this time I’ve learnt what works best for a website.

I’m not sure why but there is a big amount of people who sincerely believe that visitors to their websites care too much about website appearance. But it’s not a true statement. The reason why people come to a certain website is the information they are looking for or a product they are interested to buy from you. That’s what they care about.

The average user and your potential customer doesn’t really care about website colors, pictures, logos, headers, fonts and styles to what you give a lot of importance. They visit a website for a purpose and want to achieve a certain goal. The rest of the stuff doesn’t play so much importance.

I guess, the next question you would want to ask is whether web design actually matters at all. Certainly it does, but in a different way to what most people think. When a visitor comes to your website, he or she doesn’t think a lot about website colors when they actually affect him/her in a certain way. Some colors have much more effect than others and they are capable to arouse much more intense emotions. For instance, blue color is commonly associated with calmness and peace when red color is referred to anger and aggression. I could give you the entire list of all colors and the emotions they evoke, but not in this article.

Another important thing worth attention is the fonts and their style. The easier it is to read the content, the better chances are that the message will be read. Moving pictures, crazy changing colors of the fonts and scrolling texts will definitely make the reading process really difficult and painful. There are many many websites today which have got weird and irrelevant to the site pictures in the headers and logos. Only appropriate pictures should be used on a site to give visitors an idea about your business nature.
