What has your website got to say about your business?

26 July 2012

The arrival of Internet onto the stage of modern life has brought numerous alterations to the way companies do their business these days. Having a website is the first considerable step forward to promote a business online and globally expose the products and services to the potential clientele. The right and professionally designed website will only help you to make a good reputation to your company and show you as a trustworthy partner to work with.

It’s going to be a good practice to list your site in the featured on a big company’s website. Ask the IT manager if it’s possible to link your personal website from their site. If it is, you should definitely take this advantage and use it for your benefits. The most obvious benefit would be the power to control traffic from the company’s site to your own one and thus, to effectively promote yourself on the web.

Don’t over-complicate your website. Think about it; you’ve got only a few seconds to impress your visitors. Within this short period of time all they have to view and base their decision on is your main page. Take a look at it yourself. What do you have there on your landing page to entice new visitors to stay?

You can have the brightest website ever with all the whistles, background noises and flash applications, but with a little result. To have such website might seem quite a good idea, but serious clients are not looking for all these special effects. What they are looking for is the content. Remember, that a website overwhelmed with flashy animations, hundreds of pictures and long introductions will take some time to load. But customers are generally very impatient and if there’s somebody who can offer a better service out there, they would definitely switch on to the one within seconds. Don’t let that happen. Pay attention to all little details.

Make sure that your website has got a convenient and simple navigation system. You may think it’s a good idea to have multiple surveys on a site which pop up on the screen whilst your visitor is trying to scroll down the page, but actually most of users get quite annoyed with such things. The other important thing worth mentioning is that the usage of various background noises such as video clips and audio sounds would be really really undesirable unless you are not interested in expanding your potential clientele. Many people surf the Internet at work and therefore, the sites that play music and videos are usually closed down straight away.

The site should tell your customers what you are. You can have a single page dedicated to the history of your company and short biography, but make sure you don’t go on and on about yourself. Try to get to the point straight away and show your customers that you are a professional.

A professional web design

15 March 2012

What makes a web design look special, professional and planned? I would give such answer: “colors and color schemes”. Many people believe that there must be a certain set of color schemes which supposedly look more professional. It’s not necessarily true. I do agree that some colors have been used for business websites more frequently and look more classical but it doesn’t mean more professional.

Colors should reflect the client’s taste and business identification. Bear in mind that the choice of color scheme greatly depends on the business sphere you’re designing in. For instance, insurance companies and cosmetics websites can both look professional and trendy; however the colors would be totally different.

Rigorous classic would ideally suit the needs of the first company where colorful stokes and bright flickering could grace the second one beautifully. Color generally affects people’s perception of the website concept. When you work with a client, offer him several options and monitor the reaction. You will shortly find out what combination of colors strikes him as “professional” and “modern”. Start working from there.

Don’t be afraid to play with hue, saturation and lightness. Apparently those little changes with the lighting effects can greatly transform look of the website. Most web designers use pictures as the base and Photoshop eyedropper tool to create a particular color scheme. Try different effects, go gray-scale, highlight just a few elements on a page, don’t use simple colors, give tints to the color palette.

There is one rule to remember and this is that the background should always be muted so the content would stand out. A professional web design is supposed to effectively display the content and serve as a beautiful and stylish supplementation of the professional business website.
